Fall Fashion 101

clothes This year’s fall fashion is all about the mod look of the 1960s. Mod (short for modern) fashions are supershort dresses, knee-high socks, high-heeled boots and vibrant colors. The runways are full of loose and casually layered outfits that are still flattering, girly and chic! Think fun and retro but not hippie. Gray is a great color for the season. The runways also feature other neutrals like black, white, cream, camel and olive green. These basic colors are paired with a signature splash of vivid color such as cobalt blue, screaming pink, fire-engine red, vibrant turquoise, electric green and lemon yellow to complement the neutral outfit.

To get this chic look, try to build layers that appear to be thrown together but are actually deliberate. Layers will work best if they’re thin and in complementary fabrics so they won’t be bulky. Try wearing a sleeveless black dress over a striped sweater with ribbed gray tights and black ankle boots. Top it with a shocking pink belt to complete this mod look!

Style Trial
You don’t have to get rid of your current clothes to sport the season’s mod look. Try buying a few new pieces that capture the fall trends while still utilizing your clothes from last year. Or get together with some friends for a clothing exchange. You can head to school in style without spending a ton of money. Remember that trends will come and go, but a girl who reflects the God she serves is always in style! Check out Ephesians 6:10-17 for biblical fashion advice!

Tops
Short dresses that hit above the knee. Minidresses are extremely popular. (Keep reading for tips on how to make this style modest.) They’re worn over sweaters, shorts and leggings and are paired with boots or platform heels.

Feminine dresses and skirt ensembles. Pretty, delicate and girly, girly, girly!

Mod dresses worn with stacked heels or ankle boots. They’re absolutely adorable in bright colors paired with neutral leggings and accessories.

Empire-waist coats, hitting just above the knee and in neutral tones, paired with a bright skinny belt for that splash of color. Look for coats that are fitted and A-line, just like the mod dresses. A perk to these coats: they flatter every figure!

Bottoms
Leggings with a lot of texture and color, funky-patterned stockings, brightly colored tights and thick, knee-high socks worn with dresses, skirts or winter capris.

• Well-tailored, wide-legged dress pants worn with high heels or platform boots and a fitted sweater.

Accessories
Huge purses! They were carried on the runway with everything from jeans to formal dresses. A big bag adds yet another chic layer to your fall outfit!

• Vividly colored beanies, knit caps, berets, pom-pom fur hats and the trapper’s hat. The brighter the better! Just remember to let the hat be the main splash of color in a neutral outfit!

• Long, brightly colored scarves with pockets on each end. Scarves on the runways are thick and beautifully woven. And they’ll actually keep you warm!

Shoes
Uggs or Ugg-type boots with thick tights and dresses. Fall fashion pairs dresses with unique shoes. If heels aren’t your thing, then Uggs will help you make a statement of your own!

Boots. Knee-high boots, ankle boots, flat boots, Ugg boots and platform hiking boots. They can be worn with simply everything: dresses, skinny jeans, wide-legged pants, capris or even shorts.

Keep It Covered
Fall styles are all about mod dresses, which means hemlines will fall well above the knee. The runways show these supershort dresses paired with thick leggings and ankle boots to transition into winter.

Wear leggings as you’d wear tall socks. But be careful! Leggings are tights, not pants. They may keep you warm, but they still show everything! Mod dresses worn over leggings give a girl the feeling of being covered, but a guy sees a hemline that’s short enough to be a serious distraction! These short dresses make a guy want to see more of a girl’s body, so Satan can use you as a walking temptation to make guys sin. As Christian girls, our goal should be to prevent sin, not encourage it! If you fancy the mod style minidresses, wear them like a cute top over shorts or capris with leggings. Then you’ll be both modest and chic!

Some Looks to Try
If you’re headed to the mall, here’s a few looks you can try that require buying only one or two trendy pieces. Make use of summer dresses and sweaters you already own to make the most of your spending budget.

1. Try a flimsy dress pulled over a striped sweater with midlength shorts, thick tights and Uggs. Top with a long, cobalt blue scarf!

2. Layer a neutral-colored jacket, brightly colored skinny belt, knit beanie and gray ribbed tights with ankle boots, and top it off with a huge bag.

3. Wear winter capris with knee-high socks and boots and pair it with a long summer tunic worn over a long-sleeved shirt with a belt.
