On a Role

Disco What would it be like to . . .

• see your image screen-printed on a T-shirt?
• Google your name and discover a fan club in your honor?
• be named one of the best dressed women in Japan?
• have nearly 40,000 friends on MySpace?

Recording artist Krystal Meyers knows exactly what it’s like.

She remembers one girl in Japan who came to several shows and earned the nickname “Super Fan.” Krystal says, “The first time I met her, she and her friend fell to their knees and started crying.”

But Krystal didn’t just smile and go on her merry way. She eventually found the girl on MySpace, and they began to exchange e-mails.

“She soon realized I’m a real person, and she can talk to me,” Krystal says. “She poured her heart out to me.”

Later, Krystal learned that this girl had started going to church, became a Christian and would be baptized soon.

For that reason, Krystal says, “That’s why I do what I do.”

Growing in Wisdom
For anyone in ministry, it’s encouraging to know people are paying attention and being influenced by the Gospel through you. That’s one reason why Krystal keeps making music.

“I know what I listen to and what I get inspiration from, but to know my peers are down with what I’m doing, that’s really cool,” she says.

While it is pretty sweet to have their approval, Krystal also says knowing others look up to you shouldn’t be taken lightly. She must be conscious of her actions and loving toward people.

“A role model should treat people the way they want to be treated,” she says. “If people are watching you all the time, they’re taking notes from your actions. Who wants to look up to someone who’s not nice and has a big head?”

Role models also need wisdom, and Krystal says that’s something you learn as you mature.

“I’ve been [a recording artist] since I was 16, but that was four years ago. I think I draw from the circumstances I’ve gone through, and hopefully people can see I’m growing in wisdom and maturity.”

Krystal Making it Count
Between her last album and the latest, Make Some Noise, coming out Sept. 9, Krystal has experienced a makeover inside and out.

“God’s done a number on my heart,” she says. “I feel like I’m coming out as a new artist. It’s like a new Krystal Meyers. It feels good.”

Before, Krystal realizes she was too busy and selfish to dig into God’s Word consistently.

“Honestly, it was really hard for me to juggle being on the road and having this responsibility and keeping up with my daily studies with the Lord,” she says. “When you’re not walking with Him side-by-side every day, you get really worn out. I was letting everything get in the way.

“I knew what I needed to do to get back on the right track, but I didn’t want to make that sacrifice to wake up and, before I do anything, spend time with the Lord.”

God’s makeover of her heart included Krystal’s guitarist and parents as part of the process.

“I know there were plenty of times my band members would hear me crying,” she says. “Alex, who is my guitarist as well as my boyfriend, would ask, ‘What’s wrong?’ I look up to him so much. He really encouraged me, and my parents encouraged me. They knew what I was going through.”

mags Besides the support from others, Krystal says a dream also caught her attention. “When I woke up, I pretty much heard, ‘Live every day for Me as though it was your last,’ ” she says. Krystal didn’t push the snooze button on this wake-up call and is glad she didn’t.

Worth the Effort
Making time with God a higher priority, Krystal now sees herself with a brand-new pair of eyes.

“It’s been absolutely incredible, and I am so in love with the Lord,” she says. “Before, I was constantly on the go, drawing from the wrong well, constantly pouring out on the road. But I wasn’t being poured into since I wasn’t seeking Him.

“For so long, I was saying, ‘Keep grounded. You gotta do this. You gotta do that.’ But for a long time I wasn’t doing that myself, and knowing that was hard.”

Krystal wants her Brio sisses to realize that everyone goes through dry seasons but also to remember God is constantly pursuing His children.

“Even though I wasn’t pursuing Him, He was pursuing me. And that’s awesome! Now I’m pursuing Him daily, and it’s just a beautiful, amazing thing,” she says.

Many girls may question if God can really fulfill them and give them the strength they need: Is it really going to be worth the time? I have a busy schedule. But Krystal says you’ll want to make time for God.

“Once you start that first day, it’s like, ‘Wow! I’ve got to keep doing this.’ It’s an amazing feeling and experience. It’s so good to be near the Lord. You see all the little blessings around you magnified.”

Krystal and Mom Who is Krystal’s role model?
“My mom and I are polar opposites. She and I butted heads a lot growing up. But I started to realize I didn’t know it all, and I needed my mom. She’s such a prayer warrior! I love her relationship with the Lord. She’s just so strong—one of the strongest women of faith in my life.”
